According to regulations in Jordan, a student at a university course may be absent for a maximum of 15 % of the total number of contact hours allocated to the course. It means, you have a certain number of absence days in each course to cover incidents like flu infections, surgeries, dental appointments, driver's license exam, foreign travel to renew your residency permit, etc. Once you have used up your absence days, you must attend class regularly. If not, you will be immediately excluded from the course. It is not necessary to provide proof of the reason for your absence, as no absences will be cancelled and the 15 % must not be exceeded. Therefore, use your absence days sparingly.

Absence days may be cancelled only in the following special cases if written verification is submitted to your instructor within seven working days (counting from the first day of absence) and if it is approved by the respective committee:

  1. Participation in official university activities or activities representing Jordan (written proof signed and stamped by the dean of the respective faculty is required);
  2. 3 days in case of death of first-degree relatives (parents, siblings);
  3. Medical treatment due to a long-term illness such as cancer or following an accident requiring hospitalization for more than 3 days.

Absence days are automatically recorded by your course tutor and kept on MyGJU. It is your own responsibility to check the number of days absent and to keep them as low as possible in the interest of your language development. The double lessons on Thursdays are entered in MyGJU as one lesson on Thursday and one lesson on Friday (technically not solvable otherwise), and they are counted twice.

In exceptional cases (serious diseases), the quota for days absent may be increased from 15 % to a maximum of 20 %. If 20 % of the days absent are exceeded, a course closure will come into effect in any case, irrespective of the cause of the absence.
