On behalf of the Minister of Water and Irrigation, the Secretary-General of the Ministry, Dr. Jihad Al-Mahamid, sponsored the 1st GJU Symposium on Sustainable Development 2022 Water, Energy and Environment organized by the German Jordanian University (GJU) in cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin, German partner universities along with industrial partners and stakeholders. Experts and specialists representing many universities, institutes, research centers, and companies in Jordan and Germany participated in the Symposium.

During the symposium, Mahamid presented the most prominent challenges facing the water sector in Jordan in light of climate change, in addition to the plans, strategies, and projects that have been developed and implemented to adapt to the effects of climate change on the water sector.

For his part, the President of GJU, Prof. Ala'aldeen Al-halhouli, indicated that the university is moving on to a pioneering approach and to set an example of sustainability and work like the global institutions, in line with the UN's sustainable development goals, especially since the water and environment file is a priority in the Kingdom. Furthermore, Dr. Al-Halhouli pointed out that the university would direct research and scientific efforts in the water, environment, and green projects.

In turn, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sven-Uwe Geissen from the University of Berlin/ German Water Partnership Association gave a presentation on the German Water Partnership Association, its organizational structure, objectives, functions, and its partners around the world, stressing the importance of the topic globally and the need to combine science and business to come up with progressive development solutions that lead for the benefit of all societies.

The coordinators of the symposium, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Al-Adous, and Dr. Mazhar Al-Bdour, stated that the participants discussed the issues of Groundwater and aquifer Management – Examples from Tunisia, Morocco, and Jordan, Industrial water management, Mining industries wastewater treatment, among other topics.

They added that the event is the first in a series of symposiums to be organized to achieve sustainable development within renewable energy, water, health, economic growth, and others. It aims to introduce the challenges facing Jordan in the water and energy sector, how to find pioneering solutions and their applicability on the ground in modern scientific ways, in addition to investing in the various experiences of the participants, and networking between students, researchers, experts from the education sector, the industrial sector, and research centers.
