Project Title:
Rehabilitation of Terraces and Check Dams in Wadi Musa / Petra
Funding Agency: Danish Refugee Council (DRC)
Project Description:
This project involved the study of the ancient flood control system in Petra, including not only the archaeological elements but also the hydrology, sedimentology, paleoclimate, and geology. Ultimately, parts of the system were rebuilt to assess its functionality with regard to flood flow into Petra. The project architect and engineer designed the check dams and these were built with the help of local laborers through GIZ’s Cash for Work program. Additionally, a training course was provided to local stakeholders to train them on how to assess the soundness of the check dams and how to conduct proper maintenance for them.
This project is funded by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC).
