Objective: -To get practical knowledge of current laboratory techniques used in organic chemistry (Melting point determination, Different types of Distillation, Recrystallization, Extraction, Chromatography).
- To be able to differentiate between some classes of organic compounds through chemical tests.
- To be able to synthesize simple organic compounds such as aspirin.
- To appreciate the importance of spectral analysis of organic compounds and be able analyze different spectral data (IR, NMR) of simple organic compounds.
Syllabus: The course involves separation, purification of and identification organic compounds through their physical properties: melting point, distillation, crystallization, extraction, and chromatography; preparation of simple organic compounds; qualitative tests for selected classes of organic compounds.
