Study Group Mobility from Berliner Hochschule für Technik

Bringing chemical experiments from Germany to Jordan through the 5th SGM from Berlin

Implementing interactive experimental lectures in basic organic chemistry” was the name of project of the fifth SGM from the Berliner Hochschule für Technik (former Beuth Hochschule). The name was the goal of the project, which was carried out by four German students from the field of pharmaceutical and chemical engineering under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Rainer Senz.

The study group worked together with Dr. Samer Al-Gharabli and his team from SAMS. In preparation for their stay in Jordan, the German students spent many hours in the laboratory in order to record several chemical experiments. On the October 16th, the group arrived in Jordan to finalize their videos. Therefore, they came to GJU campus in Madaba to meet with staff from SAMS, who welcomed the group in building M and hosted a short introduction session as well as tour through SAMS. The German students were impressed by the amount and equipment of the laboratories at GJU. The same day, the students met the IO and the other study group from TU Darmstadt. Together, they were also welcomed by the IO and had an intercultural training.

The following days, the students came to the campus in order to work on the videos. The goal was to produce videos in German so that GJU students can prepare for their German Year and German lectures. Recording, editing and doing a voice over was part of the process. On their final day, the group presented the outcome of their project and showed us some videos.

In addition to the academic focus, the group decided to extend their stay in order to explore Jordan and its touristic sites. According to the German saying, “Erst die Arbeit, dann das Vergnügen” (first the work, then the pleasure), they added another week of vacation to their stay and travel as a group in Jordan until the end of October.

At the official farewell, it became clear how comfortable the group felt in Jordan and some students are considering a semester abroad at GJU. We hope that they will become ambassadors for Jordan once they go back to Germany and we would appreciate having the students for a semester or even longer at GJU.

We want to thank everyone who was involved in the project for the cooperation and support. We are pleased to facilitate this exchange, which takes place not only on the academic, but also on the cultural level.
