Our country faces a critical road safety challenge. In 2023 alone, over 170,000 traffic accidents were recorded, resulting in 560 tragic deaths. The trend continued in 2024 with around 190,000 accidents, causing 543 fatalities and more than 18,000 injuries. Each crash carries a heavy human and economic toll, costing Jordan an estimated JD958 million annually (about 2.8% of our GDP). We cannot afford half-measures; bold action is needed to reverse these trends.
The RSCE’s mission remains saving lives, but our strategy is evolving. Incremental changes are not enough, so we are launching a comprehensive, data-driven road safety strategy built on three pillars: Integration, Collaboration, and Innovation. This approach tackles the issue from every angle and aligns with global best practices.
- Integration with Sustainable Mobility: Road safety will be embedded into broader urban planning and transport initiatives. Safe roads go hand-in-hand with accessible, eco-friendly transportation. We are aligning our efforts with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities) by promoting public transport, smart city technologies, and green infrastructure. By integrating safety into sustainable mobility, we aim to create more livable and resilient cities across Jordan.
- Local and International Collaboration: Solving road safety requires a united front. We are forging stronger partnerships with government ministries, municipalities, law enforcement, academia, and the private sector. Locally, this ensures our programs address community-specific needs. Internationally, we will partner with leading road safety organizations and NGOs to exchange expertise, import proven practices, and apply successful global models. Achieving a Jordan free of traffic fatalities and serious injuries demands that all stakeholders work together.
- Innovation and Data-Driven Action: We are committed to innovation in policy and practice. This means leveraging data analytics, research, and cutting-edge technology to identify risks and implement effective interventions. From traffic management systems to enhanced enforcement and public awareness campaigns, we will continuously adapt and innovate. Embracing new solutions will help us stay ahead of emerging challenges and continuously improve road safety.
This transformation is ambitious, but the stakes could not be higher. Every life lost or serious injury on our roads is one too many. As we implement this new strategic roadmap, I invite all stakeholders—our partners, experts, and citizens—to join us. Together, we will turn this strategy into tangible results, driving down accidents and saving lives. With unwavering commitment and collaboration, we can ensure a safer, sustainable future for every road user in Jordan.
