As part of the activities of the GJU German Week, a panel discussion under the title “Reconceptualizing heritage: A bridge to mutual understanding” was held on May 28, 2024. The purpose of the panel was to explore the role of heritage in light of the new bachelors program in Cultural and Natural Heritage at GJU. As the university can be seen as a metaphorical bridge. between cultures, the establishment of this program should be viewed in this context.
The panel was headed by Professor Nizar Abu-Jaber, director of the Center for the Study of Natural and Cultural Heritage at GJU. Participating were professors Iain Stewart of the Royal Scientific Society and Claudia Buehrig of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). Professor Abu-Jaber gave a brief overview of the purpose of the panel and introduced the guests. Professor Stewart gave a presentation about geoparks and their role in both preserving important geological sites as well as fostering development of local communities. Professor Buehrig spoke about her project in Um Qais (north Jordan) involving the revival of local stone masonry traditions through expertise exchange with Germany.
This was followed by a lively discussion involving professors and students from the university. All agreed on the importance of such events in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation.
