1. Do I have to apply for statutory/governmental health insurance?

  • Yes, you have to apply for it, as the German embassy requires it.

2. Is it obligatory to register with DAK (statutory health insurance)?

  • Since GJU deals with Fintiba, our outgoing students are most likely to have the DAK insurance, as it is one of the requirements for the German Embassy. Unless your host university asks for another insurance, we recommend you take DAK insurance.

3. If I got sick or an accident occurs, where should I go and am I covered by my insurance?

  • In case of emergency call 112, but only in case of an emergency.
  • If you get sick, you can visit mostly every doctor ("Allgemeinarzt"). They are almost all covered by your German insurance company. You will have to register with German health insurance upon arrival at your place of stay. For the time between your arrival and the enrolment with a German health insurance, you should sign up for travel insurance prior to your departure to Germany.

4. Do I have to sign up for another health insurance, even if I have an international one?

  •  Yes, you do. As a student in Germany, you are required to be covered by a German insurance throughout the whole year in Germany. A German insurance will not require you to pay for health treatment unlike the international one which will require paying on the spot and then compensates only later on.
