1. Can I stay with a host family instead of moving into a dormitory?

  • If you are interested in staying with a host family, you should contact the International Office of your host university. However, not all universities offer help concerning this type of accommodation. The GJU's IAD will only help you with dormitory applications.

2. What exactly is a Wohngemeinschaft (WG or Studentenwohngemeinschaft)?

  • A WG is a community of students sharing the same flat. Mainly 3 to 6 students share one flat. The IAD very much recommends this very common way of living as it will expose you to a maximum of other students and nationalities. Keep in mind that there are no maids in Germany, so every member of the WG gets her/his share of cleaning the living room, bath and kitchen on a regular basis.

3. Is the International Affairs Department at GJU responsible for finding me accommodation?

  • No, it is not, the student is fully responsible for finding accommodation; the IAD at GJU and at your German host university will be happy to provide you with general info and support. It is advisable that students start looking for accommodation very early since there are many types of accommodation and students have various demands.
