CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

2024 Sur Place Scholarships for MA German as A Foreign Language for the Academic Year 2024/25

Application deadline: 7th of September 2024 [23:59 Jordan Time]

The Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences is granting scholarships for the most meritorious MA German as A Foreign Language student out of funds provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The scholarships are granted per year and may be extended each subsequent year of the studies under the condition that funds provided by the DAAD remain available.

Course of Study:

The study at GJU begins in October of each year (the first semester of the academic year) and lasts for four semesters. The third semester takes place at a German partner university. The semester taken in Germany is not covered by the scholarship. The study is full-time! Classes take place five days a week, and a high degree of self-study is required!

Degree:

It is possible to choose between the Thesis-Track and the Non-Thesis-Track. Applicants are asked to specify the desired track in their application.

The Master Thesis Track is suitable for students who aim for a subsequent doctorate. The study concludes with a 60-80-page master's thesis.

Notes:

  • If the academic requirements for the Thesis-Track are not met during the first two semesters, the faculty will refuse admission to the master's thesis. The master's study must then be completed in the Non-Thesis Track.
  • There is no automatic right to a doctorate. Graduates must independently seek recognition of their studies in their home countries. For a doctorate in Germany, students typically need to independently find a doctoral supervisor and obtain admission for the doctorate. From 2021, excellent graduates at GJU, in collaboration with PH Freiburg, have the opportunity for a doctorate in the field of German as a Foreign Language.

In the Master Non-Thesis Track, students take more practice-oriented courses and complete the study with a comprehensive exam and a 20-30-page project work.

The Sur Place-scholarships comprise of

Pre-Requisites:

  • A Very good BA exam or equivalent degree in German Studies, German as a Foreign Language, or related subjects and philologies. (The degree must be present by the start of the scholarship or must not be older than 6 years).
